Background and Overview - This section chronicles the history of pork production in the United States from the introduction of swine to this continent to present day mass production of pork products. Operations - Pork production combines many complex processes to produce lean and marketable livestock. This section provides an overview of those operations that work together to produce a safe and marketable product. Best Management Practices - This section includes Best Management Practices for swine operations that help to reduce the amount of soil, nutrients, pesticides and microbial contaminants released to the environment. Environmental Impacts - As animal operations become more concentrated, there are serious concerns for the potential of increased environmental impacts to surface water, groundwater, air and soil. These agriculture pollutants and their environmental impacts are briefly described in this section. Building an EMS - An Environmental Management System helps producers develop strategies for integrating environmental considerations into production decisions and long-term planning. EMS examples for agriculture and pork operations are provided. Alternative Technologies - This guidance provides an overview of several options to consider in whole or partially to improve animal waste management for pork producers.
